SUMMARY:This is Not My Culture - Open Studio
DESCRIPTION:This is Not My Culture – Open Studio\ncSPACE Neighbourhood Hub \nArtist Xstine Cook invites you to contemplate the creative potential of plastic as she transforms diverted packaging material into a full body mask creature. \nBy touching\, manipulating\, and re-purposing plastic that was intended for a single use before being thrown to Earth to process over unknown millennia\, This is Not My Culture invites you to view this miraculous material not as waste\, but as an extraordinary resource. The globe’s frantic pace of plastic generation is at the crux of the fraught relationship between humans’ minds and hearts; our addiction to convenience\, vs the interconnectedness of all life. \nThe packaging materials for this residency were generated by Cook’s family’s normal consumption over the course of a year\, and will be prepared on site in the Hub\, where the mask will be imagined\, designed\, created and exhibited. Viewers will observe the repetitive\, meticulous process of creation\, and the slow reveal of the creature. \nOpen Studio\nWhenever the artist is working\, the space will be open. See schedule for confirmed times\, or drop by to see what’s going on. \nNote: Space will be closed: September 14-18 \nEvents and Happenings\nCheck out several community events happening as part of This is Not My Culture\, including Make-Your-Own Mask sessions\, Mapperz Bring Your Own HDMI Vol II projection mapping event\, Work and Watch movie nights\, Cabaret Jam puppet meet up\, a screening of the Bum Family’s film Pollution Solution\, a special National Day of Truth and Reconciliation screening of Gitz Crazyboy’s Peace Pipeline\, and an exhibition of This is Not My Culture creations. \n*Some events request registration via Eventbrite. \n*Photo credit: Sean Dennie

SUMMARY:Canada Day: Reflections from Stories of Exclusion
DESCRIPTION:On July 1\, join us for a Lion Dance by the Jing Wo Cultural Association starting at 1:30 outside the cSpace Eau Claire Neighbourhood Hub. Then\, welcome the Stories of Exclusion artists for a discussion facilitated by Brian Wong from 2-4:30 inside the Hub. \nThe Stories of Exclusion project sheds light on how Chinese Calgarians and their families have been affected by the Chinese Immigration Act\, which was passed 100 years ago on Dominion Day (now known as Canada Day). Also referred to as the Chinese Exclusion Act\, this racist legislation essentially prohibited Chinese immigration to Canada. July 1 1923 was labelled Humiliation Day by the Chinese Canadian community. \nProject leader Dale Lee Kwong and six other artists have spent a week witnessing interviews with community members about their Stories of Exclusion. On Canada Day\, these artists will share their responses to these stories. This is an alternative celebration which acknowledges the intergenerational trauma caused by colonialism. \nThe Stories of Exclusion team includes: \nDale Lee Kwong (project lead + artist)\nCosmo Christoffersen (project manager)\nVic Ip (archivist + marketing coordinator)\nBrian Wong (facilitator + translator)\nBilly Kairan Guo (artist)\nKari Woo(artist)\nLinda Kee (artist)\nMichelle Kuku (artist)\nNick Wang (artist)\nYan Zhu (artist) \nStories of Exclusion is generously funded by the City of Calgary.

SUMMARY:We Don’t Bite – Come\, Meet an Artist! Shaun Hunter
DESCRIPTION:Have you always wanted to meet an artist? Now’s your chance! Dale Lee Kwong hosts a daily meet and greet featuring different artists from the Calgary area. There will be a short interview at 12 noon to learn about the artist\, their creative practice and any Q and A\, followed by an open house. Ask anything you want\, artists don’t bite! \nShaun Hunter is a Calgary-based writer\, reader and public historian passionate about the city’s\nliterary landscape. Her book Calgary Through the Eyes of Writers (2018) offers a journey around\nCalgary\, from its frontier beginnings to today’s contemporary city. During her term as Historian\nin Residence at the Calgary Public Library (2020)\, she created a digital literary map of Calgary\nmarking over 500 sites. \nShaun has a particular interest in 1920s Calgary – a fascinating\, largely forgotten decade when a\ndiverse community of writers set out to build a local literary culture. Her Lougheed House\nexhibit Storied City: Early Calgary through the Eyes of Writers (2020) celebrated a cast of real-\nlife literary personalities from the era. Recently\, Shaun collaborated with local artist Eveline\nKolijn to produce City of Romance: The Literary World of 1920s Calgary\, part of the Calgary\nAtlas Project. \nShaun’s explorations in the 1920s local literary scene include the Calgary years of Winnifred\nEaton Reeve aka Onoto Watanna (1875-1954)\, the Chinese-Canadian writer who lived and\nwrote here during the era of Chinese exclusion. This summer Shaun will lead a walking tour to\ntwo of the places Reeve called home – one of the many public events on offer during the\n“Onoto Watanna’s Cattle at 100” conference being held in Calgary July 27 to 29. \nWebsite: www.shaunhunter.ca and on \nTwitter @ShaunMHunter
