SUMMARY:HPR Curious Yellow Shop: Awake and Still Drowning
DESCRIPTION:One Yellow Rabbit’s High Performance Rodeo Presents\nA Series of RESIDENCIES\nAt the Curious Yellow Shop\ncSPACE Eau Claire Neighbourhood Hub\n381-2nd Avenue SW \nRESIDENCY\nArtists in Residence will have some hours where the doors will be open to the public to observe their process. Check the front door of the Curious Yellow Shop for hours! \nAwake and Still Drowning\nDustin Harvey\nJan 21 – 27 \nDustin Harvey of Secret Theatre (Halifax) joins us in residence to workshop AWAKE AND STILL DROWNING\, a cautionary fable about the day Nova Scotia becomes an island. It is a tale told through a combination of digital and live performance in which watching and performing signify the high cost of human migration when the exploited ocean takes back what is hers. The experience takes a simple approach to the interactive medium\, allowing audience members to simultaneously play the protagonist’s part\, a flock of little white birds living by the shoreline.

SUMMARY:HPR Curious Yellow Shop: Justin Miller: Queens\, Clowns\, and Fools
DESCRIPTION:One Yellow Rabbit’s High Performance Rodeo Presents\nA Series of WORKSHOPS\nAt the Curious Yellow Shop\ncSPACE Eau Claire Neighbourhood Hub\n381-2nd Avenue SW \nJustin Miller: Queens\, Clowns\, and Fools\nJustin Miller (Pearle Harbour)\nTue. Jan. 30 at 7:00pm\nhttps://forms.gle/dAoPno2XHwyxfZ2p6 \nQueens\, Clowns and Fools is an introduction to pathways for new work creation that address\, invokes\, or involves an audience’s presence directly into performance. \nAs taught by multi-award-winning drag clown Justin Miller (aka Pearle Harbour)\, this class aims to equip its participants with the skills to tear down (or at least peek around) the fourth wall\, tap into their impulse and imagination\, and open themselves up to the risk\, surprise\, and love that can arise when performer authentically listen to their audience\, and respond urgently to hug the calamity in the room. Using tenants of Pochinko clown\, bouffon\, direct address\, cabaret\, commedia dell’arte\, butoh\, and contemporary drag\, participants will tap into a presentational form that is both ancient and entirely in the moment. \nThis class is ideal for actors\, drag queens\, comedians\, clowns\, storytellers\, solo and interdisciplinary performers\, lecturers\, anyone who has the courage to stand in front of someone else and entertain with both their wits and their heart.

SUMMARY:The Hibernation Project: TIMBER
DESCRIPTION:TIMBER: a collaborative interlocking lumber sculpture\nBUILDING DAYS: Friday\, Feb 16 & Saturday\, Feb 17\, 2024 // 11 am-7 pm\nPUBLIC EXHIBITION: Sunday\, February 18 // 2-6 pm\ncSPACE Eau Claire \n\nTheme by Caitlind r.c. Brown & Wayne Garrett \n\n\n\n\n\n\nPhotos from the Glenbow Archives\, found here. \n\nIn response to the history of cSPACE Eau Claire as the former offices and vault for the Eau Claire & Bow River Lumber Company\, we invite artists & sculptors to join us in crafting a collaborative interlocking lumber sculpture. We will provide lumber\, and artists will create sculptures following (and breaking) any conventions they desire\, with the caveat that their work must\, at some point\, intersect with the sculptures around them. You may choose to work collaboratively\, or design a piece by yourself\, but the object of the experiment is to link the pieces together into one\, giant\, growing\, organic structure – in a futile effort to reanimate the wood and keep it alive. \nAt the summary of the exhibition\, all wood will be repurposed for future projects. \nThis event was inspired in part by Khalid Omokanye’s socially distanced collaborative sculpture\, ISOLATED BABEL\, for The Hibernation Project 2021. \n\nLet us know if you want to participate! \n\nYou don’t need to RSVP to visit the Public Exhibition \n\nThe Hibernation Project is an art intervention occurring annually from Winter to Spring. A tool for embracing – and combating – Winter in Canada\, each weekend an open community of artists\, musicians\, and participants respond to a theme\, creating new work around the topic\, led by local artists Caitlind r.c. SUMMARY:Welcome to My Renaissance - The Story of a Novel\, The Piano Teacher TIME TBA
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to My Renaissance is an artist-in-residency featuring Calgary playwright Eugene Stickland and friends. \nThe Story of a Novel: The Piano Teacher. Time TBA.\nFirst there is the task of writing the book in the first place. In my case\, this was a departure from writing plays\, newspaper columns and poetry. So how does the approach and execution differ? And then what happens after the book has been written? What are the best options for publishing? Once published\, how can one keep it alive in a world of a billion books. In the case of The Piano Teacher\, there has been talk of turning it into a movie. What does that process look like? We will look at different aspects of the life of a novel and I will give a brief reading from the book. Anyone interested in writing a novel\, maybe shifting from one form to another\, all are welcome! \nAbout Eugene Stickland \nBorn and educated in Regina\, after completing an MFA in Theatre at Toronto’s York University\, Eugene arrived in Calgary in 1994 and began a ten year residency at Alberta Theatre Projects. SUMMARY:Welcome to My Renaissance - ART TALK the TALK
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to My Renaissance is an artist-in-residency featuring Calgary playwright Eugene Stickland and friends. \nART TALK the TALK\nBecause I am first and foremost a playwright\, an afternoon devoted to the beleaguered art form known as “the Theatre.” All are welcome from any discipline to talk about their journey creating theatre in an increasingly uncertain age. Politics\, funding\, exposure\, security\, respect\, frustrations\, celebrations and anything else we end up talking are all on the agenda (which doesn’t really exist).  No question too great or small! \nAbout Eugene Stickland \nBorn and educated in Regina\, after completing an MFA in Theatre at Toronto’s York University\, Eugene arrived in Calgary in 1994 and began a ten year residency at Alberta Theatre Projects. SUMMARY:Welcome to My Renaissance - Poetry/Publishing Fandango: Publisher’s Forum
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to My Renaissance is an artist-in-residency featuring Calgary playwright Eugene Stickland and friends. \nPoetry/Publishing Fandango: Publisher’s Forum.\nB House and the future and recent past of publishing in this day and age. \nGuests: Kirk Miles\, Neil Flemming\, Tyler Perry\, Derek Beaulieu and others \nIn 2009 we started B House Publications\, with an eye on publishing primarily plays and poetry that otherwise might be forgotten. That was 15 years ago.  More recently\, I partnered with a theatre company to publish a play they had commissioned and produced the premier production. Whatever happened to B House and what does the future of publishing look like today? Are books necessary any longer? Are they important aspects of the writing process or merely quaint artifacts\, reminders of a bygone age\, an age most of us actually lived in and were certainly shaped by. \nAn informal discussion open to anyone interested in writing\, in publishing\, or in creating books and preserving a part of our local culture. \nAfterwards\, we will adjourn to the Ship and Anchor Pub on 17th and join the Drunken Poets Society for some poems and beer and continued convivial conversation. \nAbout Eugene Stickland \nBorn and educated in Regina\, after completing an MFA in Theatre at Toronto’s York University\, Eugene arrived in Calgary in 1994 and began a ten year residency at Alberta Theatre Projects. SUMMARY:Welcome to My Renaissance - Helen McPhaden and girls from the Stardale Program
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to My Renaissance is an artist-in-residency featuring Calgary playwright Eugene Stickland and friends. \nHelen McPhaden and girls from the Stardale Program\nJoin Eugene and Stardale director Helen McPhaden for a curated screening of the award-winning video The Road. The Stardale program caters to adolescent indigenous girls in the Calgary area. Eugene has worked with the girls of the program for 11 years\, helping them bring their ideas and poetry to the stage. Not to be deterred by the pandemic\, we transformed a stage play into a video\, shot and edited and presented it to the general public as well as special interest groups starting in 2020. The Road was written in response to the findings of the Commission on Missing and Murdered Aboriginal Women\, written and performed by the girls of Stardale 2020. \nThis session will be of interest to anyone curious about indigenous culture in Calgary\, and learning about the girls’ experience of living here. Helen and Eugene have worked with the girls for over a decade producing different shows and will share their insights on working in a  culturally appropriate manner with First Nations girls. \nAbout Eugene Stickland \nBorn and educated in Regina\, after completing an MFA in Theatre at Toronto’s York University\, Eugene arrived in Calgary in 1994 and began a ten year residency at Alberta Theatre Projects. General discussion to follow about song writing and novel writing and anything else that comes up. \nAbout Eugene Stickland \nBorn and educated in Regina\, after completing an MFA in Theatre at Toronto’s York University\, Eugene arrived in Calgary in 1994 and began a ten year residency at Alberta Theatre Projects.
