Launch Event: cSPACE Eau Claire

On Thursday, Sept. 29, 2022 Calgarians are invited to the Launch of cSPACE Eau Claire Neighbourhood Hub. cSPACE Projects is partnering with the City of Calgary and community groups to bring programming and events to this well-loved historic building until the summer of 2024.

On Thursday September 29 at 2pm, visitors are invited to the launch of cSPACE Eau Claire Neighbourhood Hub and learn more about creating this community anchor in downtown. Attendees will enjoy performances by Calgary’s Poet Laureate, Wakefield Brewster and Calgary music legend, Kenna Burima, who is the Hub’s inaugural Artist-in-Residence.

cSPACE Eau Claire Neighbourhood Hub will be a place for artists, cultural, and under-served community groups without space to gather and create. This new initiative will enliven the downtown core by activating the historic Eau Claire Lumber Company building.

“Opening this historic lumber building as a neighbourhood hub for arts and community groups will activate the vacant historic asset and enliven this area of downtown for Calgarians to enjoy.”

– Deeter Schurig, President & CEO, cSPACE Projects

The Eau Claire & Bow River Lumber Co. was established in Calgary in 1886. The present building (on the City’s inventory of evaluated historic assets) was built c.1903-04 and was the second office erected by the lumber company. Since 1978, it has been known to Calgarians as the beloved 1886 Cafe. The wood frame building is being raised to meet flood plain requirements and was moved while Eau Claire Plaza undergoes redevelopment. The building is now temporarily situated at the northwest corner of 3rd street and 2 Ave SW, and is fitted with accessible ramps, attractive outside deck areas, and inviting lighting to support the hub’s use.
